Burners on, but no air moving
Here’s one we hear in Hobart when the cold settles in. You can hear the furnace light, maybe see the flame through the little window, but nothing comes out of the vents. Or the blower hums and never gets going. After a few minutes the furnace overheats and shuts itself off. That usually points to the blower side of the furnace, not the burners.
Most of the time it’s a repair. A blower motor, a run capacitor, a loose wire, or a belt on an older unit. We find which one, write the price down, and fix it once you say yes.

Why the blower matters
The blower pushes warm air from the furnace through your ducts. When it slows down or stops, heat builds up inside the furnace and a high-limit switch shuts the burners off to protect the heat exchanger. So a blower problem can look like a lot of things: cold rooms, a furnace that runs in short bursts, or a hot electrical smell from a motor that’s working too hard.
- A hum with no airflow often means a failed capacitor.
- Squealing or grinding usually means worn motor bearings.
- Airflow that comes and goes can be a loose connection or a failing relay on the control board.
- A clogged filter can cause all of it, so check that first.

Before any work starts, you get a written, flat-rate price. A capacitor is a small part and a small bill. A full blower motor costs more, and we tell you exactly how much before we touch it. You approve it or you don’t. The final bill matches what we wrote down.

While you wait for us
If the blower has stopped and the burners keep cycling, turn the furnace off at its switch so it isn’t heating a box with no air moving through it. Keep interior doors open so the heat you have can move around, and never run a gas oven or grill indoors to warm up. A space heater is fine if it’s plugged straight into the wall and kept well away from anything that can burn. Most blower repairs are finished in one visit when the part is on the truck. Safety first
If you smell gas, leave the house and call NIPSCO or 911 from outside. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get out and call 911. A hot smell from a motor isn’t the same as gas, but if you’re not sure which one it is, treat it like gas and step outside.
